Iowa State for keeps!
Hi there friends!
It’s that time of the year when fellow high school and transfer students are looking to become a part of the Cyclone community here at Iowa State. I remember it was around this time of the year when I applied to Iowa State as a senior in high school. I got my acceptance letter sometime in February. 😉
As a senior in Puerto Rico I always had the option and also the pressure of staying on the island to study my bachelors. However, it took a trip to Europe the summer before my senior year to finally see it, I always wanted to study abroad. And by abroad I mean…the United States. My brother gave it a shot without much success (he came back to Puerto Rico to keep studying), but I always knew my brother and I were pretty different. 🙂 Something about adventuring out of my comfort zone, meeting new people, witnessing the four seasons, etc, was very enticing to me.
I applied to Florida International University in Miami (FIU), University of Central Florida in Orlando (UCF), Iowa State University in Ames (ISU) and Universidad de Puerto Rico en Rio Piedras. While I was accepted to the University of Puerto Rico pretty quickly, I waited and waited for my other acceptance letters. Iowa State’s came in soon after. And to tell you the truth, my parents were never really excited about it. My mom would say something along the lines of “It’s too far away and plane tickets would be less feasible to come visit you.” My dad would say something along the lines of “If you stay in Puerto Rico, I’ll buy you a car.”Talk about bribing! Lol. But to this day, I’m always very grateful to them for giving me a choice, regardless of what they really wanted for me.
I waited and waited and waited for the rest of my acceptance letters; they never came. Now, I don’t want you to think that I chose Iowa State because I didn’t have another choice! Lol. After all, it was soon enough in the process that I could’ve applied somewhere else or stayed home. But the “Choose your adventure at Iowa State” was always ringing in my ears. Yes, I know you know which one it is! And it’s true! Now that I’ve had my share of semesters at ISU, I can tell you that they’re not selling you false advertisement. 😉 (You can go back on my archives and witness a part of it ;)).
Ultimately, the things that made me choose Iowa State were the following:
Iowa State does a lot of recruitment in Puerto Rico. I always saw them at conventions and schools. Iowa State always caught my attention. The campus always looked beautiful from the PowerPoint slideshows and brochures.
I had two friends from Puerto Rico who had gone to Iowa State and were currently there! One of the girls was from my high school and when she came back for break I met up with her to discuss all the things I could think of asking her. And the way she always spoke about the university….wow! It didn’t seem like she had a complaint at all. Plus, I spent my free time stalking her and my other friend’s pictures on Facebook. Lol. I wanted all I could get. So…don’t feel bad if you do this too. We all do. Lol
These are some of the pictures my friend showed me of the university while it was still a possibility: 🙂
The beauty of Iowa State’s campus was undoubtedly something I couldn’t ignore. I love nature. And when I saw pictures of all the greenery and sunny skies I couldn’t resist. I daydreamed about what my days would be like. I would sit on the lawn between classes, meet new friends I could sit with and chat, etc…the possibilities were endless!
The number of majors offered by Iowa State seemed like plenty, as well. If you are anything like I was, you definitely do NOT have it all figured out yet. To tell you more, I still don’t have it all figured out. But does one ever, really? It gave me a piece of mind to know that I would have the leeway to explore a little bit without the restrictions of limited major options.
The amount of financial aid that I got was enough for me to convince my dad that it wasn’t such a bad thing if he let me go. 🙂 Luckily, I got plenty of scholarships and grants to almost cover the full cost of attending. That’s a prop of applying early! So get with it people!
Lastly, it was the promise of an adventure, four seasons, new people, and new experiences that made me choose Iowa State. There are A LOT of universities out there, granted, and a whole bunch of other places you can go have an adventure, but where you ultimately choose to go is your choice. Don’t break your head trying to choose where you’ll have more of a good time. After all, you can’t know that yet! 😀 It doesn’t matter where you choose to have your adventure. It will sure be a good one! As you don’t get to choose twice. 🙂
Choose your adventure!
