A Community Honor
Last week, the women of Alpha Sigma Kappa received a huge honor from Iowa State University. AΣK was nominated and selected for the 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Advancing One Community award for it’s achievements in supporting women in underrepresented fields, like science and engineering, at Iowa State.
As a member of AΣK, I am extremely proud of the work that we do both for ISU and the surrounding Ames community. As an underclassmen without any support system, I felt lost in the College of Engineering. With AΣK by my side, I feel that I have a friend group who knows and understands what it can be like being only one of a handful of girls in any of your classes. I also love our outreach to the community. By putting on events to help educate young women about a future in a technical field, we are passing on our stories and successes to those who may choose to follow a similar path as one of us.
Way to go AΣK!
