Famous Iowa State Banana Trees

Fun Fact: 90 percent of Iowa’s banana crop is grown on the roof of Bessey Hall

Iowa State's Banana Trees

I’ll be honest, that is probably because Iowa doesn’t have that many banana trees. That makes it easy to proclaim that Iowa State is famous for its banana trees. Well, maybe the trees are not that famous… but I think they are pretty cool. When I give campus tours, I always make sure to let people know that the trees (and many other plants) are grown on top of Bessey Hall.

I had the opportunity to see the banana trees when I gave a recent tour to FFA Students. It was a great experience to check off my list before I graduate. Another highlight was getting to see the collection of carnivorous plant.
