Best of Both Worlds
Hi! I’m Carly, a sophomore in marketing and advertising. Many of you may be asking “Why would she have majors in two completely different colleges”? Well, I am here to tell you my story.
As an incoming freshman, I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted to do. I knew I wanted to do something in business. Marketing jumped off the page as I was looking through a major pamphlet. In my first year of school, I enjoyed the business classes I was taking, but I felt as though something was missing. I have a little bit of a creative side to me, which many of you may not have guessed if I were to tell you that I were majoring in business. I once had a dream to major in graphic design, but that pursuit didn’t work out. I still wanted to do something creative, so why not advertising?
Wanting to work on the creative side of marketing, I declared advertising as a secondary major at the beginning of this year. I can now classify myself as a double major – scary, right? I wasn’t sure if I would enjoy the heavy course load, but I have found many positives in having a major in two different colleges here at Iowa State. While many students only work with one college throughout their time here, I get to work with two. This comes with many perks; I have two wonderful advisers. I am involved in two very different clubs – yet they both relate to my major. I have the opportunity to network with professionals in both areas of my curriculum. If I’m feeling creative, I can walk into Hamilton Hall and be surrounded by talented, creative individuals. But if I am feeling professional, I can put my pants suit on and rock a presentation in my BusAd 250 class.
I love being a double major and being in two different colleges. Yes, the course load gets to be a little too much at times, but the perks overshadow the faults by far. If any of you are thinking of double majoring in two different colleges, just go for it. It’s something you will never regret.
