Why You Don’t Really Need a Car at Iowa State
For years, I was told that a car was the only way to get around properly at college. Being from Illinois, a car would be great for those long journeys back home, but I’ve learned how to improvise.
Here at Iowa State, a car would be unnecessary as Iowa State makes it super easy and efficient to get around effectively thanks to a certain bus service and your cellphone.
Now if you’ve been on the Iowa State campus at any point, you most likely used the CyRide bus system. It covers a large spectrum of Ames and hits all the major areas that students occupy whether it be classes, residences, groceries and/or some city attractions. Just make sure you always have your student ID!
My experience with CyRide has been great! I even know some of the drivers because I regularly take their routes around campus. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken 6 Brown to get to work or class.
If you don’t want to leave your apartment for groceries or a bite to eat, check out Hy-Vee’s Aisles Online program.
Aisles Online is an online delivery service through Hy-Vee, where you go online and select your grocery list. Then you can have your groceries delivered to you or (if you have a car) pick it up at the store after someone has done the shopping for you. There is a fee for delivery, but you can get all your essentials without leaving the comfort of your home.
I don’t know about you, but I’m going to ask for Hy-Vee gift cards for my birthday and during the holidays.
It’s safe to say as a senior, I’ve found a few ways to get around campus and Ames without needing a vehicle. It isn’t as hard as you think and a car is not the “end-all be-all” of college. Not having a car is actually financially better since you don’t have to worry about gas, insurance or being a chauffeur.
Sure, it does feel nice to drive, but if it’s really nice weather and I don’t have any real plans, I think walking on our beautiful campus is just as good, if not better to having a car.
