Wanna major in Journalism, Advertising or PR?
Hello, I am a sophomore majoring in journalism and mass communication. If you are considering a major in journalism and mass communication, advertising, or public relations, then you have come to the right post! Those listed majors are part of Iowa State’s Greenlee School of Journalism.
I’ve compiled my favorite things about my major and curriculum to share, for those who are interested!
1. Hamilton Hall.
Home, sweet home!
As a journalism major, I spend lots of my time in Hamilton Hall, aka the home of the Greenlee School of Journalism. If you are majoring in advertising, public relations or journalism, this is where you can expect to spend a lot of your time, especially in your final years of college.
My favorite place to chill out between classes to catch up on homework or just chill is the lounge.
2. Clubs galore!
There are plenty of clubs/organizations on campus that will help you to get the hands-on experience you need, build a resume or portfolio, as well as network with other students and companies. Being active in Greenlee clubs is also great if you’re on the fence about your major and want to know what the field is like!
- Association for Women in Communications
- Advertising Club
- PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America)
- Society of Professional Journalists
- Cardinal & Gold (create marketing material for businesses and student organizations)
- Sir (general interest)
- Ethos (culture of Iowa State)
- Trend (fashion oriented)
- Iowa State Daily (news stories and reporting)
- Revival (images and art)
- Happy Strong Healthy (health and fitness)
- Cardinal Eats (food)
3. Being surrounded by creative peers.
My classmates are creative, strategic, and just overall so cool. There’s so many students who have a passion for something and want to share it with the world. And, of course, it’s kind of fun to see other people typing away at their laptops with their coffees. I just love the overall atmosphere of the Greenlee school. I love passing classrooms and seeing people conducting interviews, filming something, or having photo shoots. I love being surrounded by creative, motivated people!
4. I direct my education.
There’s a lot of different aspects of journalism, advertising, and public relations. Some people are more interested in the strategic or research aspects, while some are more interested in photography and filmography. Some people are more interested in writing, and others are more interested in reporting or public speaking. You get to pick the classes that suit your interests and expertise, and get involved with what your passions are. It’s truly an incredible experience.
