Battling the Iowa Winter
I don’t know about you guys, but personally one of the worst things I’ve had to do lately is battle my way through campus while trying not to get frozen by the time I reach my destination.
Motivating myself to get up out of my warm bed and face the freezing cold is way too difficult, and I’m assuming I’m not alone in this. Let me share with you some tricks I’ve learned these past few months that help me get up and face the cold each day.
The first thing I do when questioning if I reeaallyyy need to go to class while I’m laying in my warm bed is telling myself that you basically pay $100 per class, so if you skip a class, it’s like you’re just throwing away $100. (Now I’m not sure how accurate this actually is but someone told me this and it helps motivate me so I’m not going to question it too much.)
After about five alarms, I finally make it out of bed and into a warm sweatshirt. Right before I brace myself to leave my room, I get my giant coat that goes down to my knees. If you don’t have one that goes down that far, I highly suggest it, it’s a life saver for when you have to make your way through a cold, windy campus. If I’m lucky, I stop and get the biggest size of hot coffee available, but usually I sleep in too much so I don’t have time before class and it turns into an after class stop. My favorite place to go is in the Gerdin Business Building and I get the white mocha almost every time.
THE most important thing to look out for is ice. Always make sure you look where you’re stepping because if you don’t the ice will literally come out of nowhere and you will look like a fool as you painfully slide to the ground. While walking around outside I play my beach playlist and just pretend I’m somewhere warm. It doesn’t really help, but at least I can imagine that my hands aren’t freezing off. The most effective thing by far though is being completely bundled up and walking as fast as you possibly can because nothing can really prepare you for the cold and windy environment that awaits so you just have to try and get to where you need to go without wasting any time.
