Best Donuts in Ames
Okay, I know that this post may not be super important to anyone else, but I just really desperately need to write it. This topic is very personal to me and I can’t spend another week not talking about it.
I have done some serious research for this blog post and I feel like no one is quite as qualified as I am to discuss this topic. If you haven’t been to my profile page before you may not know this, but I am a passionate donut consumer. Like, at this point I would consider it a passion, a hobby, a vocation. It is truly what I was put on this Earth to do.
I generally try to eat a pretty well balanced diet and generally do a decent job, but if there is a donut available all of my will-power goes out the window. There is something about a donut that just ruins every bit of self control that I have. Also, when you have an 8 a.m. class, what better than a donut and coffee to help you get through?
With that being said, I have searched high and low for the best donut in Ames and I definitely think that I have found it. But first, let me discuss each of your possible options.
If you’re looking for proximity and convenience, Dunkin’ Donuts is your best bet. Located right on Lincoln Way adjacent from campus, Dunkin’ Donuts always has a wide variety of flavors that are easily accessible if you are in a hurry and can’t stray too far from campus. They also have seasonal flavors that are always delicious and have funny names if that’s appealing to you.
If you’re looking for the biggest bang for your buck, Walmart is the place to go. They have these delicious raised donuts with vanilla frosting and they are only like 58 cents. If you have a little extra free time or are already out and grocery shopping, swing by the baked goods section.
And finally, the best for last.
Van Hemert’s Dutch Oven Bakery
Van Hemert’s gets my vote for best donut in Ames. The bakery is family owned and they have literally everything that you could possibly want. But my favorite by far is their donut that is glazed AND frosted. It’s a genius combination and is covered with a ton of sprinkles. I have never had a better donut. And I’ve eaten a lot of donuts in my day.
So let me just wrap this up by saying if you’re going to have a cheat day, go to Van Hemert’s Dutch Oven Bakery. It is well worth the trip off campus. If you have a different donut place for me to try, PLEASE let me know.
