The Importance of a Support System
I believe that having some type of support system next you as you go through stages of life is extremely important. Through my time at Iowa State University, I have been fortunate to have a great sense of support from fellow students as well as individuals in administration. It is a good balance to have both in my opinion. From my support system, I have been able to be exposed to characteristics about myself that I might not have been able to point out on my own. Through the knowledge and wisdom that continues to be shared with me, I have become a stronger leader to serve communities.
Some people may argue about fellow students sharing wisdom. I would respond by stating that everyone has a different background and has experienced different things. They might recognize a path that you may be heading on and inform you that it is a positive or negative path, because they have either witnessed or experienced it themselves.
I strongly believe having a strong bond of support from peers and/or mentors will take people far in life. Leaning on people and allowing people to lean on you as well helps maintain that motivation and inspiration that was there in the beginning. Honestly, I would not be where I am at currently if it wasn’t for the people in my life that have been there to support and help me grow. When I look back, I have definitely grown from the person I was when I graduated from high school in 2015. This is due to being open-minded and having the willingness to listen to the feedback and criticism that people had to share.
Life is a process of growth, just make sure you have the correct folks in your corner.
