What’s good, people? My name is Malik and I’m a junior with a journalism and mass communication major.

A midwest kid with a mind (and mouth) that never runs out of
ideas, I am a guy who loves
to entertain people and a
“not-so-secret” theater and
food junkie.

I’m in the Black Student Alliance, Iowa State Improv Comedy Club, a Greenlee Ambassador, and an Iowa State Daily/KURE 88.5 podcaster.

But anyway, enough about me!
Let’s get to work!

What is First Amendment Day?

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!

Soon, First Amendment Day will be here at Iowa State University and yours truly will be one of the Masters of Ceremonies.

For those who are unaware of what this special event is, First Amendment Day is a 3-day celebration that intends to honor the five freedoms that form the basic foundation of our nation’s democracy. This year marks Iowa State University’s 15th annual celebration of First Amendment Day, which will be held this April 19-21, 2017.

Organized by passionate Greenlee students and faculty, Leo Mores Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and several other campus groups and community organizations, First Amendment Day isn’t simply another big campus event; it is an annual event that will be here for years after we graduate and should mean a lot to you if you understand what freedom of speech, press, religion, petition and assembly mean to college students.

Past speakers and events include:  Senior White House Correspondent and political editor for McClatchy Steve Thomma; Brooke Miller of the Iowa Civil Rights Commission; Frank LoMonte, executive director of the Student Press Law Center; stand-up comedy; live music and workshops to teach high schoolers what the First Amendment means.

Oh, and of course, the Feast on the First!

It’s a great time and if you have any free time over those dates, I’d suggest coming out and learning what the First Amendment Day means for you as a college student.
