You’re From ______, What are You Doing in Iowa?
If you’re studying at ISU and call any other state than Iowa home, you probably get this a lot:
And sometimes it gets to the point where you’re just so tired of answering that question that you just ugh:
I have friends reppin’ California who would have their tuition paid if they had a dollar every time someone asked them why they moved to Iowa. I think sometimes that Iowa natives take for granted how awesome ISU is. Other states can see that too, and there are some great programs here that draw people from every corner of the globe to Ames, Iowa. So here’s an ode to my fellow out of staters. May you never forget just how awesome you really are.
We are the birds who migrated south for warmer weather, but still wanted to be close to home. We’ve lived the first part of our lives as Iowa’s top hat. This move was inevitable. We laugh in the face of Iowa winters and we sure know how to look fabulous when the cold hits. We may have to set the facts straight about Fargo, but you can bust out the Minnesotan accent like it ain’t no thang.
You may be a little further away from home, but you know awesomeness when you see it, and you’ve had your sights on ISU for a while now. You may say you’re from Chicago just to avoid confusion, but rep that suburb friend. WORK IT.
You are definitely a long ways from home, but you need to strut your out of state stuff. You are probably here for one of our amazing programs (especially the vet school). You are a rare and exotic breed of student, making you instantly super cool. Don’t be afraid to show it!
From Michigan to Colorado, from Idaho to Missouri, you guys are what makes ISU great. You bring the funk, and may I say your dance moves are impeccable?
We’re glad you’re here. Keep doing your thing, and don’t be afraid to share stories and pictures from home. You come from a tropical paradise that anyone would be jealous of. It’s okay for you to rub it in a little that you live there.
